DLECTRICITY to return with art installations, light bike parade

This year’s event will take place September 22-23 from 7 p.m. to midnight. Anyone interested in joining the Light Bike Parade should register here

The DLECTRICITY Light Bike Parade returns in 2017 as the "Rolling Light Exhibit"

Saturday, September 23, 2017 from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM (EDT)

As one of the DLECTRICITY's signature exhibitions, the Light Bike Parade allows the community to be in the show! The parade starts in the heart of Midtown on the campus of Wayne State University and will wind its way throughout the area where the public will line the streets and enjoy the light show.

It's time to start planning your bicycle light decorations and try to win one of the prizes. This year our judges will select the best decorations in these categories.

  • Most Creative Adult Bike Light Display
  • Most Artistic Bike Light Display
  • Most Creative Youth Bike Display (under 12)
  • Most Unique Bicycle Helmet Decoration
  • Best Team Themed Bike Light Exhibit (4-6 bikes)
  • Most Original Family Bike Light Exhibit (Adult/Kids)

This is not the typical Detroit-style bicycle ride, but a short parade of riders displaying their bike decorations and lights as they ride leisurely through the streets of Midtown. In 2014 we had over 1,500+ bikes participate in the parade. This year our goal is to LIGHT IT UP with everyone riding with their bikes decorated and glowing brightly.

Please register online. The parade begins when it gets dark.

The DLECTRICITY Light Bike Parade is sponsored by:  Shinola Detroit and Wheelhouse Detroit.

In 2012 and 2014, DLECTRICY lit up Midtown with art and light over their September weekends. The inspired festival returns this year September 22-23 with 35 local, national, and worldwide artists; a smaller footprint; and a light bike parade.

Midtown Detroit, Inc. is partnering with DTE Energy Foundation and many more for this year’s two-night festival, which will take place between the MOCAD and the Detroit Institute of Arts.

This year’s event will have artists from Australia, the UK, Japan, and Germany, plus New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Portland, Baltimore, Cleveland, and Detroit. The event is inspired by similar art festivals in Paris, Sydney, Toronto, Minneapolis, and New York.

A full list of artists can be found here.

“DLECTRICITY has bonded audiences in public spaces with art that has surprised, enlightened and awed us. It promotes art that is of the moment, yet speaks to timeless themes through new means,” said Benjamin Kennedy, Kresge Detroit Program managing director. “Within that context, we are particularly proud to support Midtown Detroit’s focus on recruiting and commissioning Detroit-based artists and artists of color, and elevating the legacy of the 1967 rebellion and other themes relevant to Detroit residents.”
